Short Video On The Basic Differences between these three Forms of Security.

Remember, No router password No security.

The WEP, WPA, WPA2 Key represent passwords to gain access to a wireless local area network or LAN.

At the core of most Wi-Fi home networks is an access point or router that requires a password. Passwords that come with your router are well-known to hackers since they are very easy to remember. The manufacturers use the same ones over and over. Software is also available online for anyone that can not figure out there password. Making it very easy to hack into a WLAN.

Remember when you purchase a new router to change these password settings immediately.

Just remember, NO PASSWORD NO SECURITY!!!

When there is free wireless and you do not need a password to access a network you are opening your computer, tablet or phone up to anyone that is searching to access information on the network. This is possible at many businesses and airports even your home network when their is no Password established.

Three different forms of security and are known as WEP, WPA and WPA2. Think of WEP as very easy to hack, WPA as average and WPA2 as great when it comes to WLAN security. Combine WPA with PSK-AES-CCMP (and a long password) and you should have secure wireless network.

The Differences Of WEP vs WPA vs WPA2

WEP means (Wired Equivalent Privacy) is a security code that is necessary to gain access to a local areal network. Passwords are assigned using a 16 or 32 bit hexadecimal numbering system that are easily hacked.  Technically it is a deprecated security algorithm for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. WEP is easily hacked and Software is available on the internet to help figure out a lost WEP Key. Thus making it very easy to figure out.

Because of these security issues WPA was established to eliminate them.

WPA meaning Wireless Protocol Application is a set of security protocols for connecting computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones and other radio devices to the internet. The WPA  protocol suite consist of mainly 5 different applications that provide interoperability of WPA equipment and software with different network technologies such as GSM and IS-95. This security is not as easily hacked as is WEP.

WPA2 has replaced WPA. WPA2 must meet certain criteria and requires testing and certification by the WiFi alliance. It also implements CCMP (Counter Cipher Mode Protocol) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) in key is the password necessary to access a WAP network. WPA certification is mandatory for all products that carry the WiFi Trademark.

Remember passwords are often included and preset when you purchase a router.  Remember to create a unique password for your network. Then place it in a safe spot.
